Featured Project - National Physical and Sensory Disability Database (NPSDD)
TEKenable was awarded the contract to provide a centralised facility for the collection, management, analysis and dissemination of disability services usage and demand information for the Health Research Board (HRB) in June 2003 after an extensive public tender process. The system is used by each of the Health Boards and by the HRB on behalf of the Dept. Health and Children. The information it provides will be used in planning disability service provision in 5-year strategic slices.
Fiona Mulvany, Head of the Disability Databases Division in the HRB said
“The NPSDD system centralises the management of service needs information and provides for a user-friendly mechanism enabling statistical analysis to inform and support the strategic planning of specialised health services for people with disabilities in Ireland.
We are delighted with the work that TEKenable has done, delivering a complex system in a challenging timeframe.”

This project involved substantial analysis, design (technical, aesthetic and usability), development (Microsoft platform) and data migration as data was consolidated from each of 30+ Community Care areas across the country. The data concerned is private and medical in nature and as such security and control form a substantial element of the project.
The illustration above shows one of the managed workflow-screens from the NPSDD system. The blue boxes are buttons that can be clicked to perform an action to move a case along the workflow. The numbers above the boxes indicate the number of person’s whose details are awaiting action at each step in the workflow. It permits an at-a-glance view of the workload and bottlenecks. The page shows figures for cases that relate to the specific user logged in.

Data acquisition is based around the concept of Cases. Each individual that is identified to the system as a possible candidate for the database is managed through a structured workflow process. The workflow engine manages the timely movement of persons from one stage to the next and generates information on progress and bottlenecks in the process.
Documentation relevant to the case and its position in the various workflows is automatically generated at the relevant process step in MS-Word format and provided to the user for editing and filing. Incorporating our incredibly flexible Ad-Hoc reporting engine the NPSDD system generates reports in MS-Word, MS-Excel and SPSS formats. TEKenable were engaged in late April 2004 to plan and deliver Phase 2 of the NPSDD, which went live in July 2004.

The system is a centralised application accessed over the Government VPN. Based on SQL Server with ASP and Visual Basic elements the system is a pure bespoke Microsoft application managing critical data for health service planning.
The application is build on the TEKenable framework library, which provides a wealth of functionality ranging from user management and encryption through to workflow and reporting capabilities. Using the framework can greatly accelerate the delivery and increase the quality of application delivery.
National Intellectual Disability Database
TEKenable has also developed and launched (December 2004) the National Intellectual Disability Database (NIDD). Built upon the TEKenable framework code and sharing a platform with the NPSDD the NIDD was delivered in just three months and went live without problems.
